From oil & gas to geothermal

In March 2024, EAPOSYS was invited by the Geothermal Energy Association of Norway (GEAN) to present at the University of Stavanger, at a seminar focused on transferring oil & gas drilling and well expertise to geothermal energy.

For EAPOSYS, the setting was particularly relevant. Advanced Geothermal Systems rely on many of the capabilities developed by the oil & gas industry: deep drilling, directional wells, completions and subsurface engineering; redirecting them toward harvesting heat rather than hydrocarbons.

The presentation also introduced EAPOLAB-Arctic, an initiative developed with NORCE and GEAN to explore the demonstration of AGS technologies in Longyearbyen, Svalbard.

This joint seminar organized by UiS, GCE Node, NTVA, and GEAN and sponsored by Stavanger Kommune & NORCE explored the role of oil and gas competence in geothermal applications and the potential of repurposing of abandoned O&G wells for geothermal energy production, digitalization and advanced drilling technology to enhance geothermal resource potential.
